Wall Art for Bedroom: Size Over the Bed, Height, and Calm Palettes
Above a bed, aim for art that spans 60–75% of the headboard width and hang the bottom edge 8–10 inches above the headboard. Centre height should be 57–60 inches from the floor — the same line your eye lands on when you walk in.
How wide should art be over a bed?
Measure the headboard, not the bed frame. A queen headboard is typically 62–66 inches wide, so a pair of 16x20 canvases with a 3-inch gap (about 43 inches total) sits comfortably inside the 60–75% band without competing with bedside lamps.
Over a king headboard (76–80 inches), three 16x20 canvases with 4-inch gaps reach about 56 inches and stay balanced. If the wall is short — under 40 inches of clear space — one 18x24 centred on the bed is the cleaner answer.
How high above the headboard?
Leave 8–10 inches of bare wall between the top of the headboard and the bottom of the canvas. Closer than that and the art feels crowded when you sit up in bed; much higher and it drifts away from the bed and starts to look like it belongs to the ceiling.
