A guqin — the ancient Chinese seven-string zither — rests diagonally across the canvas, its long dark form rendered in deep charcoal ink. The instrument's body is a single bold elongated shape with subtle organic curve, hand-painted with feibai dry-brush texture suggesting aged lacquer and wood grain. Seven delicate strings are traced as hairline ink lines running parallel along the body, each one slightly wavering. Thirteen small mother-of-pearl position markers — hui — are indicated by tiny pale circles with single ink dots at center. The qin floats in vast empty space, the scholar's companion, silent but resonant. A single wisp of incense smoke curls upward from the lower-left.
